Dreaming About Water? What Your Birth Chart Says About Your Subconscious

A woman came to see me about two months ago. She said she’d been dreaming about water every single night. Sometimes a still lake, sometimes a muddy river, once her apartment was flooding and she couldn’t find the drain.

She was there to ask about her relationship. The water dreams were almost an afterthought — she mentioned them at the end, like “oh and also this is happening.”

That’s usually where the important stuff hides. The thing someone mentions last, almost apologetically, is often the thing they actually need to talk about. Thirty years of consultations and this pattern holds about seventy percent of the time. The other thirty percent, they genuinely just forgot. People are complicated.

Jung would say water represents the unconscious, the deep currents of the psyche you can’t see during waking hours. In Five Elements theory, Water (水) governs wisdom, adaptability, and the Kidney system. The two frameworks aren’t contradictory. They just look at different layers.

But here’s what most generic dream sites miss: the state of the water matters more than the water itself.

Clear, calm water in a dream typically signals smooth flow — finances moving, relationships stable, clarity of thought. Murky or turbulent water is almost always a warning. Something is clouded, confused, blocked.

This client’s water was getting murkier over time. First week, a clear lake. Second week, a yellowish river. By the third week, flood water with debris.

I told her the water pattern suggested things were deteriorating somewhere in her life. She looked at me like I’d stated the obvious. “Yeah, my boyfriend and I are falling apart.”

Then I ran her chart.

Her BaZi was Water-heavy to begin with. Born in a winter month, Gui Water day master, with additional Water in the month and hour pillars. On top of that, she’d just entered a ten-year luck period that brought — more Water.

Too much of any element creates problems. We have a saying: 满则溢, when the vessel is full it overflows. Her chart was overflowing with Water, and her dreams were showing her exactly that. Literally.

I told her the relationship issue and the water dreams were probably connected. When Water overflows in someone’s chart, it often manifests as emotional overwhelm, overthinking, inability to set boundaries. The murky water wasn’t just about the boyfriend. It was about her entire emotional system being saturated.

She asked me what to do.

This is the part where a lot of practitioners would give a confident prescription. “Wear yellow. Face northeast. Eat root vegetables.” I’ve seen colleagues rattle off these lists like pharmacists. I’m more cautious about that. The Five Elements framework gives you direction, not a recipe.

I suggested she might need more Earth in her life — Earth controls Water in the Five Elements cycle. Practically speaking, that could mean grounding activities, stability, routine. Yellow and brown colors. Spending time in nature rather than staying in her head. She was a freelance writer who worked from home alone, which is about as Water as a lifestyle gets. I told her even small structural changes — a morning walk, a regular schedule, eating at fixed times — could shift the balance.

Whether those changes actually helped or whether the relationship was simply the main problem, I can’t separate the variables. This isn’t a controlled experiment. It never is.

Two months later she reached out. She and the boyfriend had broken up. But here’s the thing I didn’t predict — she said the water dreams turned clear after the breakup. Not gone, still there, but the water was calm and transparent.

I’m still not sure how to interpret that. The breakup removed a source of turbulence, obviously. But I’d expected the Water excess in her chart to keep producing chaotic dreams regardless, since the luck period hadn’t changed.

Maybe the relationship was amplifying what was already there. Maybe removing it brought her Water back to a manageable level. Maybe I’m overthinking it, which, ironically, is a Water-excess behavior.

A colleague of mine — different school of thought, more traditional — would say the dreams were the body’s way of processing and releasing excess Water energy. That once the emotional blockage cleared, the Water found its natural level. I find that explanation elegant but I’m not sure I buy it completely. Sometimes I think we practitioners construct narratives that are satisfying rather than accurate.

That’s the honest answer sometimes. You get a result, but you’re not entirely sure you understand why.

If you’re dreaming about water repeatedly, pay attention to what the water looks like. And if you want to understand why — your birth chart is a good place to start. dreamsaid.org has a free calculator that maps your Five Elements. See where your Water sits.
